Read MoreAfter moving to New York City in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Maggie White, Senior Associate, Market Data Sales, saw the need to help the unhoused community around her. After learning about local volunteer organizations through a quick google search, Maggie became a consistent volunteer for The Bowery Mission, a non-profit organization that provides meals, shelter, clothing and other services to people in crisis in New York City. Through her four years of work with The Bowery Mission, Maggie earned one of Cboe’s 2024 Outstanding Community Service Awards.
The Bowery Mission has been serving the New York City community since the 1870s and has continuously provided shelter for those who are unhoused, even during a global pandemic. On top of providing shelter for community members, The Bowery Mission provides daily meals and clothing. In 2024, The Bowery Mission provided 400,000 meals, 65,000 nights of shelter and 27,000 articles of clothing to New Yorkers in need.
“I believe the Bowery Mission is doing life changing work,” Maggie says. “I see first-hand how many people are relying on the food we serve and the shelter we provide to survive in New York City. It is a place of refuge that has never closed its doors.”
Maggie serves meals on the kitchen line every Friday to help combat hunger in her community. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served daily for anyone who walks in the door, no questions asked. Volunteers like Maggie are crucial to serving the 900 daily meals that the New York City community relies on.
In addition to volunteering in the kitchen line, Maggie recently joined The Bowery Mission’s associate board, helping organize local events as a member of the fundraising and advocacy committee. The main fundraising event is the yearly summer social which raises money to support The Bowery Mission’s Mont Lawn summer camp, a camp that provides kids in under resourced areas a time to leave the city and connect with others. This past summer marked 130 years of the Mont Lawn Camp adding to the extensive work The Bowery Mission accomplishes to give back to their community and provide a fun space for children.
“There are numerous children who need the support of The Bowery Mission for shelter and food,” Maggie says. “It’s inspiring that this organization also takes the time to make kids feel like kids and send them off to camp.”
As a part of Maggie’s Outstanding Community Service Award, Cboe will donate $5,000 to The Bowery Mission.
“The donation from Cboe is life changing money,” Maggie says. “Every dollar helps provide compassionate care services like shelter, food and clothing which truly saves lives.”
